Maduro Rallies His Supporters

'Battle for the Future'

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has declared that the December 6
elections are a "battle for the future."

Speaking at a public rally on Monday, Mr Maduro said Sunday's parliamentary
elections would decide the future of the South American nation's socialist
revolution.

"This is a vital battle for the future of peace and for our children," he
stressed.

But the president warned campaigners for his United Socialist Party (PSUV)
not to count their chickens.

"No-one can be overconfident," he said.

Venezuela's Washington-backed opposition hopes to reverse 17 years of
left-wing electoral dominance that began with the election of late president
Hugo Chavez in 1998.

The Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) umbrella coalition's candidate
Henrique Capriles narrowly lost out in the 2013 presidential election.

That poll was held as a concession to the opposition, as then vice-president
Mr Maduro stood to assume office automatically on Mr Chavez death.

But the MUD demanded a recount, alleging electoral fraud as they had
routinely done in previous elections.

In the US, prospective presidential candidate Hillary Clinton claimed that
Mr Maduro's government "has been doing all it can to rig these elections,"
pointing to the recent jailing of two opposition leaders on criminal
charges.

In September Popular Will (VP) leader Leopoldo Lopez - whose party holds
just one seat in the National Assembly - was jailed for almost 14 years for
inciting last year's anti-government riots that left 44 people dead.

PSUV assembly member Robert Serra and his partner were murdered in their
home during the unrest.

The warmongering former secretary of state also said she was "outraged at
the cold-blooded assassination" of opposition leader Luis Diaz, who had
known links to notorious gangs.

The Democratic Action (AD) party Guarico state secretary was killed last
Wednesday following an election rally in the town of Altagracia de Orituco.

But last week regional broadcaster Telesur reported that Mr Diaz was known
to have been involved in organised crime and had previously been
investigated for murder.

It said the prime suspect in his killing was rival El Picure gang member
Oscar "El Pipi" Noguera.

The prosecutor's office announced on Monday that three men had been arrested
over the murder.
