South Africa:

Unions Express Alarm at Mine Closures

South African trade unions expressed their "deep alarm" yesterday over
85,000 job cuts announced by mining giant Anglo American.

Union federation COSATU called on the government to take action following
Tuesday's "calamitous pronouncement" that the company plans to close mines
around the world.

Spokesman Sizwe Pamla pointed out that South Africa would be hardest hit as
the firm employs 45,000 workers there.

The country's vital minerals and energy industry is already in crisis with
Lonmin - formerly Lonrho and previously owner of the infamous Marikana mine
- already planning 6,000 redundancies.

"These mining companies made profits in the last two decades and they
spirited their profits out of the country to foreign banks and tax havens,"
Mr Pamla said, calling for their extraction licences to be revoked.

"We cannot afford to have these mining companies continue to use this
country as a badly managed casino, where they smash, grab and leave."
