SADTU provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza says they are happy with the
ongoing investigations into the murder of some KZN teachers this year.

In a statement released by the department in November Department of
Education MEC, Peggy Nkonyeni called for tough action to be taken against
the perpetrators.

This was after an incident of the killing of Sandile Hlela, a teacher in the
Richards Bay area.

Hlela's murder was before the murder Sikhumbuzo- Mkhize, another teacher,
from the Nquthu area.

Caluza said as SADTU they are happy that what they have been calling for is
taken seriously by the department.

Investigations are supported by the freezing of some vacant teacher posts by
the department.

Caluza said it is only posts that are suspected to be linked with the
murders.

Reports in the media revealed that some of the murders are allegedly linked
in the fight for certain positions.

"Not all vacant posts are being frozen. It's only a few posts of the
teachers who are suspected to have been killed in the fight for positions.
Other vacant posts will be filled as appointment letters have already been
sent to deserving candidates.

"The majority of the murdered teachers were members of SADTU. That is why we
called for investigations. We are happy they are already under way and we
promise it won't affect teaching and learning," said Caluza.

Other teachers who were killed in KZN this year include Vusi Ntombela from
Nquthu, (deputy- principal) TS Mkhwanazi and Villa Maria Primary principal,
Nokuthula Magwenyana.

In an interview with the SABC the Department of Education spokesperson
Nkosinathi Sishi- said they have decided to have a special investigation of
all cases where allegations are made. He said the posts will be frozen until
investigations are done.
