JS Commemoration.gif South African Communist Party Announcement, Johannesburg, 3 January 2016 On the 21st anniversary of his death: SACP to commemorate Comrade Joe Slovo The South African Communist Party (SACP) will be commemorating the 21st anniversary of the death of Comrade Joe Slovo. At the time of his death on 6 January 1995 Slovo was the National Chairperson, Politburo and Central Committee member of the SACP and first Minister of Housing in our country's first democratically elected government. He was a member of the African National Congress National Executive Committee. Together with South Africa's first democratically elected President Nelson Mandela, Slovo was involved in the founding of the joint ANC-SACP liberation army, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK). He held various positions of responsibility, including as MK Chief of Staff. Slovo was involved in key sites of struggle and participated in strategic centres of power as an activist, a leader and an intellectual of note. He was involved in developing the strategy and tactics of our liberation struggle as a whole and the Communist Party's political programme. Slovo's intellectual work, strategic and tactical thinking, working in the context of collective leadership, spans almost all key documents of our liberation struggle, including, our very Constitution as a country! The SACP will use the commemoration to highlight key tenets of its programme of action for 2016-2017 as well as its posture on important issues! Details of the 21st Commemoration Anniversary of Comrade Joe Slovo's death are as follows: • Date: 6 January 2016 • Time: 10h00 • Venue: Avalon Cemetery, Soweto • Speakers: ○ Keynote address: SACP General Secretary Comrade Blade Nzimande ○ Messages of support: Leaders from Alliance partners ANC, COSATU and SANCO ○ Young Communist League of South Africa, National Secretary, Comrade Mluleki Dlelanga The media is invited to attend and cover the event. The event will be preceded by a march to be staged as follows: • Assembly Point: Regina Mundi Roman Catholic Church (No. 1149 Khumalo Street, Rockville, Soweto - next to Thokoza Park) • Assembly Time: 08h00 • Departure Time: 09h00 The march will then proceed to Avalon Cemetery where the main event will be held.
