2015 National Senior Certificate Results

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] cautiously welcomes
the 2015 National Senior Certificate results as announced by the Department
of Basic Education yesterday.

The YCLSA congratulates the class of 2015, their families, teachers,
principals and the Department of Basic Education on the matric results
achieved. We would also like to congratulate the South African Democratic
Teachers Unions [SADTU] for the sterling and demanding job they perform in
teaching our children.

The 5.1% drop from 75.8% to 70.7% should not be taken lightly and the
contributing factors to this decline must be investigated and fixed as a
matter of urgency. The challenges that engulf the education sector in South
Africa must be confronted head on as they have a huge potential to derail
our goals as a country.

The 5.1% decline should be taken as a warning call to all stakeholders to
work in harder in ensuring that the class of 2016 increases the pass rate.
This will require teacher union, parents, SGB's and all relevant
stakeholders to monitor and play an active role in the learning of the class
of 2016.

As the YCLSA we are very worried that rural provinces continue not to do
well. The Eastern Cape is in the 50% range, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal are in
the 60% range while Mpumalanga is in the 70% range. We call on the Minister
to provide all the necessary and required resources to deal with this dire
situation.

The YCLSA as part of the 'New Deal' for the youth calls for the escalation
of the opening of training and second chance opportunities for young people
that have not completed secondary education. Those that have not passed
cannot be ignored and measures must be put in place to ensure that they are
given a second chance to pass their senior certificate.

As part of our Joe Slovo Right to Learn campaign in 2015 we adopted 36
schools that we closely worked with. As the YCLSA we are more than elated to
announce that of those 36 schools that we had adopted they showed
improvement. This year we will redouble our efforts and ensure that we adopt
more schools. We commit ourselves to work even harder in working hand in
glove with schools that performed poorly in 2015.

As part of our Joe Slovo Right to Learn Campaign in 2016 the YCLSA commits
itself to carry out the following tasks:

. To ensure that all teachers are in class teaching

. Learners are in class learning

. To work adopt and support problematic schools especially that did not
do well in 2015

. To intensify our campaign of closing down shebeens that are in close
proximity to schools

. To work hand in glove with the South African Police Service in ridding
our schools of drugs

. To ensure that books are delivered on time

The green paper on higher education has the full support of the YCLSA. The
paper calls for a shift in attention from universities to Further Education
and Training (FET) colleges and for them to become the institutions of
choice for school-leavers. These will capacitate work places directly with
the skills that are needed as well as offering increased choices to school
leavers.

We would like to encourage the class of 2015 to explore all the options open
to them for 2016 and beyond. Various options such as NSFAS loans, SETA's,
bursaries and FET colleges exist to give opportunities to students. Equal
opportunity for a high quality education for all students is one of the key
factors behind the Cuban educational success. South Africa must strive
towards achieving this goal.
