Syria:

Key Town of Salma Back Under Army Control

The Morning Star, London, 13 January 2016

Syrian army troops retook the strategic town of Salma in northern Latakia
province yesterday.

The state-run Sana news agency reported that soldiers backed by the National
Defence Forces militia had driven the al-Qaeda- affiliated Nusra Front and
its local allies the Ahrar al-Sahel Brigade from the town and surrounding
villages.

Salma lies a few miles south-west of Jisr-al-Shughur, seen as the key to
advancing on the city of Idlib - also held by the Nusra Front and the Army
of Conquest - beyond which lies government-held Aleppo.

North-east of Idlib lie the besieged villages of Foua and Kfarya, where UN
aid convoys arrived on Monday in parallel with deliveries to rebel-held
Madaya.

On Monday Syria's permanent representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari
accused militants in Madaya of seizing previous government aid shipments and
using civilians as human shields.
