SADTU asks Education Department:

Support demoralised teachers

Jenni Evans, News24, Cape Town, 13 January 2016

The education department needed to support its teachers because their morale
was at an all-time low, the SA Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) said on
Wednesday.

Crowded classes, constant policy changes without consultation, and massive
workloads were causing stress and health issues, the union said as pupils
around the country settled in for the new academic year.

Spokesperson Nomusa Cembi said the teachers wanted quality development
programmes, curriculum support and the necessary infrastructure.

They also wanted to get their teaching materials and funding allocations on
time.

Cembi warned not all provinces would have the teachers they needed at the
start of the first term due to the introduction of new norms and standards.

Placing late enrolments

She said teachers were, however, still looking forward to the first day of
school and wished Grade 1s, in particular, a good start to their school
journey.

Education department spokesperson Troy Martens said final national intake
figures would only be available once districts forwarded them to the
national office.

In the meantime, the department was monitoring the process of placing pupils
who had enrolled late. In Gauteng, 16 000 pupils had not yet found a place,
mainly due to migration.

The department was, however, confident places would be found for them, but
warned that pupils might have to go to a school able to accommodate them,
rather than the school of their choice.

Martens also said there should not be any issues with textbook deliveries
this year.

She said once all pupils were accommodated, the department would know how
many more books were needed.
