New Age2.png Pupils hold on to government tablets Batandwa Malingo, The New Age, Johannesburg, 26 January 2016 "Bring the tablets back now" is the call from the Gauteng education department as more than 11000 tablets remain in the hands of the matric class of 2015. The department has warned of disciplinary action against those who fail to return the state-owned electronics. "The department has already retrieved 81% of tablets from the pupils. However, the department is on track to recover the outstanding ones from the schools and pupils. By the end of this month all the outstanding tablets will be retrieved," department spokesperson Oupa Bodibe said. About 60000 were distributed to the matric class of 2015 last year. "All tablets have tracking devices and the classrooms have been secured to minimise theft of LED smartboards," Bodibe said. On those who have not returned the tablets, Bodibe said disciplinary measures can be taken against pupils who transgress the school's ICT utilisation policy. "The tablets remain the property of the department. The pupil and parents have signed an undertaking to return the tablets in a good state at the end of the year. It is a criminal offence to steal or damage the device," Bodibe said. More than 300 township schools benefited from the roll-out of tablets last year as thousands of devices and interactive boards were distributed to improve the quality of education in townships. The department revealed that more than 3000 tablets were stolen last year, costing the state millions. That prompted the recall of about 88000 tablets to install new tracking technology following a series of burglaries in schools.
