SACP members angered by ANC visit to Inchanga

An attempt to show solidarity between the SACP and the ANC in Inchanga,
KwaZulu-Natal, has angered local SACP members who called for provincial
leadership to leave.

The ANC and SACP senior leadership on Thursday visited the homes of two
people who were killed during an SACP community meeting on January 24 at the
Kwadokeni Sports Grounds.

By Thursday afternoon, ANC officials had not responded to claims that the
five men arrested for the shooting were in fact ANC branch executive
committee members in Inchanga. This was despite numerous attempts by News24
to contact senior ANC officials.

While KwaZulu-Natal ANC leader Sihle Zikalala and SACP general secretary
Themba Mthembu were addressing media on Thursday morning, a number of
Inchanga SACP members gathered outside the home of slain SACP member Phillip
Dlamini, calling for Zikalala to leave the area.

"Sihle must go. We do not want him here," one woman said.

Leadership

Reacting to the calls from locals, Mthembu said: "There will always be
murmurs of negativity. But we are here to provide leadership. We strongly
believe everything is under control. We will be able to handle the
situation."

According to Zikalala, the two political powerhouses visited Inchanga to
show support for the families of the shooting victims and also to begin a
process to "normalise this situation".

He, however, conceded that there were tensions between the SACP and the ANC.

"There are serious tensions in the branch. However, we believe that by
providing leadership, we will be able to mediate stability and unite the
people. We know that if this situation is left unattended, it will not be
good."

When asked about the ANC Youth League's call for Mthembu to step down,
Zikalala said: "That statement should not have been issued. We will deal
with it internally."

Asked to react over ANC members being arrested for the shooting, Zikalala
said the law needed to take its course.

"The law must take its course. The ANC principle is clear. Let's allow the
matter to be investigated. The police must investigate the root cause and
take action."

The five men arrested - Bafanyana Maxwell Shange, 42, Zamokwakhe Shozi, 38,
Buka Shozi 44, Nhlanhla Majola, 44, Mabhunu Madondo, 36 - were all remanded
in custody on Wednesday and would appear in court again on February 10.
