Nzimande calls for unity in tripartite alliance

South African Communist Party (SACP) General-Secretary Blade Nzimande has
called for unity among organisations within the ANC led tripartite alliance
in honour of the late party and ANC intellectual, Jabulani Nxumalo. Nxumalo,
affectionately known as Mzala by those who worked with him, died in London
in 1991 at the age of 35.

Activists from various organisations like Sasco, trade unions, ANC and the
Young Communists gathered in the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
(CPUT's) ABSA Auditorium.

Nxumalo was posthumously awarded the Order of Luthuli in Silver in 2010 for
his contribution to the liberation struggle.

Nzimande says he was recruited by Nxumalo into the SACP in London 1989. He
says Nxumalo would have loved to see unity with the entire movement. "We are
really facing a challenge of dangerous factional activities in our
organisations, and its important to do away with this. Comrade Mzala would
rather have issues of differences being debated, and seek to find one
another, and its crucial if we are to take forward many challenges facing
this country."

Vice Chancellor of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Prins
Nevhutalu, says the institution should take the lead in producing a film on
the life Nxumalo. "Our university as a place of intellectual development, of
research, renovation, would like to contribute in the preservation of the
life of this South African giant, who have made significant contributions
scholarly, had he lived beyond 35 he would today be called a doctor."

Organisations attending the lecture called for unity among alliance
partners. Representatives of trade unions, students, and the ANC have
delivered messages of support during the memorial lecture delivered under
the theme "Let's close ranks and unite the people's camp".
