Morning Star.png Plane Seized in Harare after Dead Body Found on Board The Morning Star, London, 16 February 2016 Zimbabwean aviation officials said yesterday that they had seized a US jet after finding a dead body and millions of South African rand on board. Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe general manager David Chawota confirmed a plane registered with Western Global Airlines had been impounded at Harare airport on Sunday after technicians noticed blood dripping from it. “The crew requested to land for refuelling but our ground-handling personnel discovered blood leaks and became suspicious,” he said. Western Global Airlines is reportedly based in Florida. The crew were identified as including two US citizens, a South African and a Pakistani. The Herald newspaper reported that the plane was “stashed with millions of rands.” “The cargo in the plane belongs to [the] South African Reserve Bank,” Mr Chawota said, giving no further details. It was not the first time that a jet has been seized at Harare in suspicious circumstances. In 2004 a charter flight to Equatorial Guinea carrying 64 South African mercenaries led by British ex-SAS officer Simon Mann was stopped there. All on board were arrested and charged over what became known as the Wonga Coup. Mark Thatcher, son of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was arrested at his Cape Town home that year on suspicion of funding the plot. He left the country the following year without standing trial after paying a three million rand (£130,000) fine.
