News24white.png Calls for war in SA short-sighted - ANCYL Mpho Raborife, News24, Johannesburg, 28 February 2016 Calls for more violence by students partaking in protests on campuses throughout the country are ill-advised and short-sighted, the ANC Youth League said on Sunday. "I don't think we want to be in a situation where we turn the country into a bloodbath, and that is starting to come out, one way or another," the youth league's deputy chairperson in Gauteng, Vuyo Mhaga, said. "There's beginning to be a serious tension in South Africa. It might be easier for people who might not have engaged in war, to actually say that." Mhaga was addressing reporters in Pretoria following a multi-party meeting between the ANC in Gauteng and its alliance partners, as well as Afriforum, its youth organisation and trade union Solidarity. The organisations had met to discuss the situation at higher education institutions in Gauteng, specifically at the University of Pretoria (UP). Mhaga told reporters that those calling for war should bear in mind the effect it would have on the country. "You remember there was an Arab Spring [in Egypt], and the reality of the matter is that that Arab Spring remains in a winter. There is still chaos. "So it's easier to say, 'let's go in flames'. The reality of the matter is that when South Africa is in flames, we are not sure how long it will take us to basically come back." Mhaga said this did not mean ignoring the problems raised by society. Their problems needed to be put on the table and discussed. However such discussions could only be held in a conducive environment and not through intimidation.
