Somalis Repel Foreign Military Raid

The Morning Star, London, 10 March 2016

Somali al-Shabab guerillas said yesterday that they had foiled an airborne
night raid by unidentified foreign commandos.

The special forces-style operation saw troops in two helicopters land two
miles from the southern coastal town of Awdhegle, about 30 miles south-west
of the capital Mogadishu.

The small force sneaked into the town to launch a surprise attack but
apparently was discovered, leading to a gun battle near the local police
station.

Al-Shabab said it had inflicted casualties on the attackers and forced them
to retreat, adding that one of the guerillas had also been killed in the
fighting.

"They were masked and spoke foreign languages which our fighters could not
understand," al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab told the Reuters
news agency.

"We do not know who they were, but we foiled them."

While no country claimed responsibility for the attack, it came just three
days after a large US air raid on an alleged al-Shabab training camp in
Somalia's central highlands near the Ethiopian border.

The US Defence Department claimed on Monday that the bombing had killed 150
militants who were preparing an attack on US or African Union troops in the
country.

The African Union mission did not comment on Tuesday night's commando raid.

The possibility of increased US military involvement in Somalia recalls
Washington's humiliating defeat by local militias in the 1993 battle of
Mogadishu.

Three police officers and a civilian were killed yesterday when a car bomb
exploded outside a cafe near the police academy in Mogadishu.
