Communists reject call for female president

The SA Communist Party (SACP) has rejected the call by the ANC Women's
League (ANCWL) for a female president to replace President Jacob Zuma as ANC
leader next year, labelling it a "church organisation of women".

"How will electing a female president liberate the women of South Africa?"
SACP central committee member Charles Setsubi asked, addressing Police and
Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) political school in Boksburg on
Wednesday.

Gossip

"The current ANCWL had been transformed into something like a church
organisation of women. In their tone they don't talk about women in rural
areas, corporate sectors and women in every aspect of society." Setsubi
accused the league of gossiping at its meetings.

"They go and assemble there alone," he said. "Their audience is not there .
to me that is tantamount to gossip. Otherwise when they meet, they should
invite their husbands, boyfriends to address the issue of women
emancipation."

Without mentioning names, Setsubi suggested that the ANCWL had been hijacked
by "other elements". "We do not know where they are coming from," Setsubi
said.

Even though the ANC tradition favours Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to
take over from Zuma, the ANCWL is believed to be in favour of African Union
commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma taking over the reins.

Decisiveness needed

Earlier, Popcru president Zizamele Cebekhulu accused the ANC of not being
"decisive" and "scoring own goals on the eve of elections". Cebekhulu said
the union does not want people to lose faith in the ANC because of its
"indecisiveness".

"The ANC must start to govern and govern seriously," he said. "We have given
you the majority, but you seem not to be sure if you are governing or not.
We don't want the ANC that on the eve of elections introduces e-tolls."

However, Cebekhulu said Popcru, which had thrown its weight behind suspended
police commissioner Riah Phiyega, would back the ANC in the upcoming local
government elections.

Cebekhulu made startling claims that those who had been at the forefront of
the failed agenda to divide trade union federation Cosatu were still working
with external forces to weaken the federation. Although Cebekhulu didn't
mention former Cosatu boss Zwelinzima Vavi and Numsa leaders by name, those
close to him said the comment was clearly directed at them.

Suggesting that the Democratic Alliance was manipulating the black vote
while hell-bent on defending white privilege, Cebekhulu said the DA would
permanently remain incapable of representing or advancing the interests and
aspirations of black people.

"We need to dispel the myth that the DA is an organisation aimed at serving
the interests of all South Africans," he said. He also heaped praise on
Zimbabwe's ageing President Robert Mugabe, 92, who has been in power for
over 34 years.
