SAMWU axes leaders - again

Theto Mahlakoana, IOL, Johannesburg, 15 March 2016

The SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has once again removed three top
leaders including its president, Pule Molalenyane after barely six months on
the job.

The union's central executive committee (CEC) has accused Molalenyane, his
1st deputy John Dlamini and Treasurer Portia Lindi of scheming to
destabilise SAMWU in order to align it with the yet to be launched
federation setup to rival COSATU.

A statement released on Tuesday by the union's central executive committee
which voted on the axing explained the leaders had gone against a congress
decision to support and defend its federation, COSATU.

"We were shocked to learn that our former National Office Bearer(s) are now
taking a different direction, that of conniving with the new federation and
they are attending meetings in the dark corners without our mandate," said
SAMWU general secretary, Simon Mathe in a statement.

The new federation backed by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA and
former COSATU general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi will hold its founding
congress on May 1st.

The former leaders are also said to have taken unilateral and
unconstitutional decisions to remove provincial leaders.

According to the statement, several attempts were made by members of the
SAMWU CEC to compel their leaders to hold a meeting in order to deal with
these issues to no avail.

"Our former National Office Bearers were running the union like private
property which left us with no option but to look for remedial measures in
terms of the constitution," explained Mathe in the statement.
