Syrian Government Troops Drive Back Isis on 2 Fronts

The Morning Star, London, 16 March 2016

Syrian troops advanced against Islamic State (Isis) on two fronts yesterday,
keeping up the momentum as Russia's six-month intervention came to an end.

In eastern Deir Ezzor, soldiers backed by reservists and local tribesman
liberated the Thardeh mountains from Isis forces besieging the city of
200,000 people.

Troops also advanced to the Thayyem oil fields, which were captured by Isis
in January.

Isis launched an offensive in the province on Monday, taking advantage of
sand storms that grounded Syrian air force jets.

But the death cult's forces have been weakened as reinforcements were sent
to counter Syrian special forces attacking the ancient city of Palmyra.
General Suheil al-Hassan's shock troops advanced towards the village of
Al-Dawah yesterday despite suffering heavy casualties.

If liberated, Palmyra could be the key to lifting the siege of Deir Ezzor
and striking at the Isis stronghold of Raqqa.
