ANC to Launch 2016 Local Government Election Manifesto

In exactly a month from today, the African National Congress (ANC) will
officially launch the ANC 2016 Local Government Election Manifesto at the
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape Province on
the 16th of April 2016. The Manifesto is expected to be an unambiguous
expression of the views of the people on the type of society together we
should be building.

Guided by the ANC's 2016 theme "Year of Advancing People's Power: Local
Government is in your Hands", the manifesto will be the culmination of
extensive consultation process with across all sectors of society on how
best to deal with our country's most pressing challenges - unemployment,
poverty and inequality.

Since the first democratic local elections held in the year 2000, the ANC
has remained committed to a transformative and developmental agenda to build
better communities. While tremendous progress has been recorded in
developing our local government system and delivering a better life for all
our people at community level, much more work still remains to be done to
achieve a National Democratic Society.

The ANC has always considered Local Government as being a critical tool in
the hands of our people, empowering them to participate in their own
liberation as active instruments of their own development. As the sphere of
government closest and with the most direct contact with our people, it is
imperative that the ANC delivers a manifesto that continues to be alive to
the challenges of our people with concrete plans that, working together,
will address them - driven by public representatives committed to their
revolutionary duty to serve the people.

Preparations for the Manifesto Launch are in full gear. Members of the media
are invited to apply online for media accreditation to the launch from
today, 16 March 2016 until Friday, 01 April 2016.
