Syria Set to Liberate Another Town

The Morning Star, London, 31 March 2016

Syrian troops and militia fighters launched what could be their final push
to liberate the town of al-Qaryatayn from Islamic State (Isis) yesterday.

Three army brigades, backed by the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, Qalamoun
Shield and Desert Hawks militias - attacked Isis positions in orchards
outside the town.

Capturing the orchards would leave Isis, which has occupied the town for
seven months, penned in on three sides.

Al-Qaryatayn, which has a sizeable Christian population, lies to the west of
the recently liberated city of Palmyra.

Western block

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said yesterday that she
was "not so much surprised as disappointed" that Western nations had blocked
a UN security council motion welcoming Palmyra's recapture.

Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said demands by Western-backed
opposition factions for a "transitional body with full executive powers" to
govern the country were "illogical and unconstitutional."
