Morning Star.png Mongolians Protest at Mine Profits Sent Abroad The Morning Star, London, 31 March 2016 Two thousand people protested in Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar yesterday demanding the redistribution of mineral wealth. Assembled in the city’s Freedom Square, they called for the dissolution of parliament and a new government because of alleged corruption and the economic crisis battering the country. Protesters said the minerals that account for 94 per cent of Mongolia’s exports have been exploited by foreign firms with few benefits going to the country’s three million people, one-third of whom live in poverty. “Our wealth is shipped outside the country. Where is that money going?” opposition MP Battulga Khaltmaa asked the crowd assembled by the Ethical Mongol umbrella group of small political parties and civil society organisations. Mr Battulga was particularly critical of the terms extended to Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto to develop the £3.7 billion Oyu Tolgoi copper mine, where expansion talks have stalled over the government’s demand for more revenue.
