I am reliably told that Cde Shirish Nanabhai passed away in the night. Whether it was yesterday evening or this morning, is not yet clear. Shirish was a freedom fighter, saboteur against the apartheid regime, stalwart of the South African Communist Party, the Transvaal Indian Congress and the African National Congress. In 2014, Shirish was awarded the Order of Mendi for Bravery in silver. After embracing his fellow former inmate when giving him the award, the now President of South Africa recalled that when he arrived at Robben Island Prison, Shirish and his comrades were already there. Shirish was a wonderful person, and a beloved person to many, many people. Now begins a process of gathering together memories, documents and photographs so that they can be shown widely to people as we mourn our lost veteran comrade, who was a national hero among the large number of plain, but at the same time extraordinary, national heroes of South Africa.
