News24white.png Date set for appeal against Hani murderer's parole Kaveel Singh, News24, Pretoria, 2 April 2016 The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services announced on Saturday that an application for leave to appeal against a decision to release Janusz Walus on parole will be heard on April 12. The appeal, to be heard at the High Court in Pretoria, automatically suspends the order that compelled Justice Minister Michael Masutha to place Walus on parole and set his conditions within 14 days, the ministry said in a statement. Walus was convicted and sentenced for the 1993 murder of SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani. Masutha previously indicated that the department would be appealing against the High Court in Pretoria's decision to release Walus on parole. "The minister believes that the honourable court erred in its judgment and is of the view that there are prospects of success on appeal and that the appeal court will arrive at a different conclusion," the ministry said in an earlier statement. Hani's widow Mpho described the court ruling as "racist" while others, including the Young Communist League of South Africa, said Walus did not deserve to be back in society.
