IEC welcomes announcement of election date

ANA, SABC, Johannesburg, 6 April 2016

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on Wednesday welcomed the
announcement by President Jacob Zuma that the 2016 municipal elections will
be held on Wednesday August 3.

In a statement, the IEC said: "The date falls within the
Constitutionally-mandated window to host municipal elections between 18 May
and 16 August this year."

The Electoral Commission said the announcement of the date for the municipal
elections "created certainty and clarity and allows detailed planning by all
stakeholders including the Electoral Commission, political parties,
government departments, voters, the media, observers and others".

The IEC said the announcement was especially welcome ahead of this weekend's
final registration opportunity at voting stations as voters could now plan
where they may be on August 3.

"This was particularly important for students, migrant workers and others
who may commute between two places of residence."

Not the official proclamation: Voters can still register

"The announcement of the election date is not the official proclamation of
the municipal elections," the body said. "This is scheduled to occur later
and triggers the election timetable and a range of legislated events -
including the official closure of the voters' roll for the elections."

"This means eligible voters can still register and update their registration
and address details this weekend at their voting stations and at the
Electoral Commission's local offices until the official proclamation."

Earlier on Wednesday, the presidency said: "President Jacob Zuma is pleased
to announce the date for the next local government elections today. The
elections will take place on 03 August 2016."

The statement added that Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional
Affairs, Des van Rooyen, would follow the necessary legal procedure to
proclaim the date and undertake any other requirements.

"We urge all those who are eligible to vote register to vote and those who
have not checked their names to do so on Saturday and Sunday this weekend so
that together we continue to re-affirm and deepen our democracy," said Zuma.
