Morning Star.png Court Refuses to Block Regime-Changing Impeachment The Morning Star, London, 16 April 2016 Brazil's Supreme Court ruled against a motion yesterday to block an impeachment vote against President Dilma Rousseff. Judges voted 8-2 in the small hours to deny Ms Rousseff's last-minute appeal, saying it was not their role to get involved at this stage of the process. Chief Justice Ricardo Lewandowski, one of the two Supreme Court dissenters, said: "Impeachment is a political action, yes. But who said that political actions can't be debated by the judiciary?" The impeachment debate started yesterday and will continue until tomorrow's vote. If two-thirds of MPs vote for impeachment, the motion will pass to the senate. Filing Ms Rousseff's case on Thursday, Solicitor General Jose Eduardo Cardozo said the impeachment motion was "contaminated" as it went far beyond the original allegations of budget over-spending against the president. "We are not talking about the merits of impeachment" but rather the process, he said.
