Morning Star.png 1965 Massacre of Communists Exposed at last The Morning Star, London, 19 April 2016 An unprecedented two-day conference on anti-communist massacres carried out in Indonesia with British and US complicity in 1965-66 began yesterday in a Jakarta hotel. Retired general Agus Widjojo brought together survivors and representatives of the military that orchestrated the atrocities, declaring that Indonesia remains "torn apart" by the massacres. He urged government to establish a commission for truth and reconciliation. Slaughter, banning Successive regimes have glossed over the mass slaughter of up to a million people, while descendants of Communist Party members are still barred from government jobs. The conference is supported by government figures and was opened by minister in charge of security and political affairs Luhut Pandjaitan. The killings began in October 1965 following an apparent abortive coup in which six right-wing generals were killed. The then unknown General Suharto blamed the assassinations on the three-million-strong Communist Party and ushered in a 32-year military dictatorship. Declassified files reveal active British and US support for the killings, with Britain even escorting troops to the massacres and the US passing hit lists to the Indonesian military.
