Overcrowding in Free State classrooms worries SADTU

Overcrowding in classrooms, the conversion of temporary teachers' posts to
permanent, and the completion of incomplete laboratories built across the
Free State are some of the desperate pleas by teachers belonging to the
South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU).

About 2000 teachers marched to the provincial headquarters of the Free State
Department of Education in Bloemfontein to hand over a memorandum of
grievances.

Teachers say their grievances have fallen on deaf ears.

They say talks with Free State Education MEC Tate Makgoe, dating back to
2009 when he took up office, have not yielded any positive results. Now they
want Free State Premier Ace Magashule to step in.

Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport Butana Komphela accepted the
memorandum on behalf of the premier [Ace Magashule].

"All the things that are here are things that I can give a guarantee that
99% are things that the premier can sort out and get right," says Komphela.

Speaking at another event in the province, premier Magashule says the issue
of outstanding subsidies is in the process of being dealt with.

Teachers have given government 21 days to respond to their grievances.
