Kurdish Militias Attack Syrian Republic Forces

The Morning Star, London, 22 April 2016

Fighting continued yesterday between the Kurdish militia and government
troops in the north-eastern Syrian border town of Qamishli.

Clashes broke out on Wednesday when members of the local Asayish Kurdish
"police force" refused to stop at a National Defence Forces (NDF) militia
checkpoint.

The Kurdish YPG militia joined the fray, also assaulting the city's Allya
prison. Sixty-seven NDF fighters were reportedly captured and a dozen or so
fighters died on each side.

A truce negotiated overnight between the government and YPG parent group the
Democratic Union Party (PYD) collapsed three hours later.

The YPG reportedly also clashed with ethnic Assyrian militias.

In a further escalation, Islamic State (Isis) claimed to have carried out a
suicide bombing on a group of YPG fighters yesterday, killing 15 of them.
