Eyewitness News 3.png Violence Erupts at Fort Hare amid Centenary Celebration Preparations The SRC says its funding protest has been hijacked by people trying to disrupt centenary celebrations. Nompumelelo Ngubeni and Xolani Koyana, Eye Witness News, Johannesburg/Cape Town, 19 May 2016 The University of Fort Hare's Student Representative Council (SRC) says its protest over funding issues has been hijacked by people trying to disrupt the institution's centenary celebrations. Last night, protesting students set tyres and a tent alight and damaged some buildings, saying they want management to release grants for meal allowances. <https://youtu.be/qEuB0_Wd61k> Arson in Fort Hare.jpg Video from SABC A number of student organisations at the institution had given management an ultimatum this week. The groups, including the South African Students Congress (SASCO), Democratic Alliance Students' Organisation (DASO) and the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command, want management to address student debt issues, among other matters, or face further demonstrations against centenary celebrations, which are due to take place tomorrow. The university says despite efforts to resolve the impasse this week, it's concerned some students are intent on disrupting its celebrations. But SRC president Bulali Rawana says there are calls to ensure students have accommodation and food before the exams. "It has nothing to do with student grievances and our struggle is being hijacked. We're not sure by whom exactly, but we do know the interest is to stop the centenary and to make sure it doesn't continue. We don't have such an interest as students but we do have an interest in our grievances being addressed." Meanwhile, police are out in force at the university following protests. The SRC's Sonwabiso Mamnkeli says, "We discussed in the meeting that we don't want violence or to boycott anything, but management has to answer us before centenary celebrations start."
