YCLSA Press Statement, 19 May 2016

Continuous burning of institutions of higher education

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] notes with disgust the
illegal criminal activities taking place in institutions of higher learning
of burning university properties.

The YCLSA believes that such actions of destruction of property is not only
backwards, life threatening and counterproductive, but also exposes the lack
of ideological orientation and anarchic syndicalism of the so called fees
must fall remnants and the Economic Freedom Fighters [EFF] who fail to lead
students but resort to targeting university property in a bid to seek
attention. How EFF leaders behave in parliament is how their student command
behaves in institutions of higher learning. A path of destruction must
always exist wherever they are present.

One cannot divorce the utterances of Julius Malema on his interview with Al
Jazeera on April 23, 2016 that they are going to remove the current ANC-led
government through the barrel of the gun. To us this means that they have
conceded that they are not going to win the August 3, 2016 elections and
they have to use violence to try and win the country.

Day before the burning of the University of Fort Hare the EFF student
command at the university tweeted that "The @MYANC must know we are getting
impatient with what they're doing to our Mps. Julius Malema sinike ibhazuka.
The country will burn". A few hours later the university did burn.

As the YCLSA we refuse to treat both the burning of institutions of higher
learning and schools as unprompted acts of vandalism. We hold a strong view
that what happened in Vuwani, UJ, and Fort Hare is interconnected, our view
is that one grouping is responsible for these acts of hooliganism. We
suspect that all these acts of vandalism are aimed at creating turmoil in
this country and that their ultimate goal is to agitate for regime change.

On May 8, 2016 we raised our concerns about the deficiencies in the Ministry
of State Security. The ministry continues to be reactive rather than being
proactive. The Ministry must be able to sniff such acts before they even
happen and act accordingly. The Ministry must be refocused so as to fulfil
its role of defending this country and its democracy.

The YCLSA agrees that students must raise their views without fear or
favour. Student's interests must be championed without destroying property
because Universities are a heritage of students and belong to the community.
Students must guard jealously their Universities and must report any one
involved in burning University properties. Universities must open up
dialogue with students and must never refuse to communicate and listen to
the concerns of students.

The YCLSA calls on all its members and supporters from institutions of
higher learning to distance themselves from any protest that burns or
destroys property. We are going to meet our branches in UJ, Fort Hare and
VUT as institutions that are targeted so that they assist us to find
solutions for students in their institutions.

We call for law and order to take its course and arrest all criminal
elements. We are concerned that such criminal activities take place during
exam time and disrupt the academic calendar in institutions concerned. It is
not in the interest of students to burn their university buildings and
anyone who fights on behalf of students must always remember this.
