ANOTHER Coup Minister Forced Out For Corruption

The Morning Star, London, 18 June 2016

Brazilian coup tourism minister Henrique Eduardo Alves quit on Thursday
following corruption allegations — the third head to roll in a month.

Coup president Michel Temer’s office did not say why Mr Alves had quit, but
the minister said: “I don’t want to create awkwardness or any kind of
difficulty for the government.”

His resignations came a day after the release of damning plea bargain
testimony by former state oil firm Petrobras executive Sergio Machado.

Mr Machado alleged Mr Temer asked him to pay more than £280,000 in bribes to
Mr Alves’s campaign treasury from Petrobras subsidiary Transpetro.

Mr Machado also alleged that Mr Temer had solicited a similar sum for his
Brazilian Democratic Movement Party 2012 Sao Paulo mayoral campaign.

Mr Temer, banned from standing for office for eight years for breaking
election law, claimed the accusations were “irresponsible” and “ludicrous.”

Another of Mr Temer’s cronies, environment minister Sarney Filho, was named
in Mr Machado’s testimony, though at the time of writing he was still in his
post.

Mr Alves was just the latest name among 20 figures in Mr Temer’s interim
government to be implicated in the corruption scandal since the legislative
coup against President Dilma Rousseff last month.

The first ministerial resignation came just a little over a week after Temer
assumed the presidency.

Planning minister Romero Juca stepped down after leaked audio recordings
suggested he was plotting to obstruct the Petrobras corruption probe.

A week later, transparency minister Fabiano Silveira quit after he was heard
in the leaked tapes advising a politician investigated in the Petrobras
case.
