News24white.png David Cameron announces resignation following Brexit vote News24, from London, 24 June 2016 British PM David Cameron has announced his resignation following the results of the Brexit vote, in which the British public voted to leave the European Union. Cameron says he will resign by the fall and insists the British people's will must be respected after voters chose to leave the 28-nation European Union. Cameron says there can be no doubt about the result of Thursday's historic vote but that he is not the "captain" that will steer the ship through difficult negotiations with the EU. The dramatic announcement came after a sharp fall in the pound. Cameron said: "I am honoured to have been prime minister of this country for six years. I love this country and I feel honoured to have served it and I will do everything I can in future to help this great country succeed." He said the country had "just taken part in a giant democratic exercise, perhaps the biggest in our history. Over 33 million people from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar have all had their say. "We should be proud of the fact that in these islands we trust the people for these big decisions."
