Cops arrest suspect in murder case of first Tshwane casualty

TMG Digital, The Times, Johannesburg, 29 June, 2016

Police have confirmed that they have arrested a suspect in connection with
the killing of African National Congress (ANC) member Simon Mollo Modihe two
Sundays ago.

"Yes, we have made an arrest," Colonel Noxolo Kweza told Sowetan.

She would not say when the suspect would appear in court. "I don't think
[he'll appear] today," she said.

The suspect was nabbed on Tuesday in Tshwane. Kweza confirmed he will be
charged with murder, with a possibility of more charges.

Mollo Modihe became the first casualty of the unrest in Tshwane sparked by
the ANC's decision to nominate Thoko Didiza as its mayoral candidate for the
city.

He was shot dead outside the Tshwane Events Centre where ANC branch leaders
had gathered to be briefed about the party's preferred mayoral candidate.

Unrest spread across townships in Tshwane last week, claiming four more
lives. Police said the four were killed during looting attacks.

Police arrested 200 people last week.

They were charged with public violence, possession of unlicensed firearm and
ammunition, possession of stolen property and malicious damage to property.

Calm has since returned in the city.

Man arrested for Tshwane ANC member's murder

Thulani Gqirana, News24, Pretoria, 29 June 2016

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of an ANC member in
Pretoria.

Simon Modihe was shot while he was waiting for the ANC to announce that
Thoko Didiza was its mayoral candidate for the city of Tshwane on June 19.

Modihe was with a group of supporters outside the Tshwane Events Centre
(formerly Pretoria Showgrounds) when two men reportedly walked up to the ANC
group and opened fire on them.

Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the man (36) was arrested in
Pretoria yesterday.

The murder of the ANC member was one of four deaths in a week that saw
violent unrest in the capital city.

Police said the man arrested would appear in court either today or tomorrow
and would be facing charges of murder.
