Morning Star.png Pistorius Jail Sentence Only Extended by One Year The Morning Star, London, 7 July 2016 The Women's League of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANCWL) reacted angrily yesterday after a judge added just one year to Paralympian Oscar Pistorius's jail sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Judge Thokozile Masipa described Mr Pistorius as a "good candidate for rehabilitation" as she increased his original five-year sentence to six following an appeal by prosecutors, who wanted at least the minimum 15-year tariff for murder. Ms Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June, were also present in the courtroom. ANCWL secretary-general Meokgo Matuba accused Judge Masipa of "undue sympathy" to Mr Pistorius. "As the ANCWL we are appalled by the assertions made by the judge that this was not a gender-based violence case," she said, pointing out that Ms Steenkamp's autopsy showed bruises not linked to the shooting. Ms Matuba called the sentence a "slap on the wrist" for a murderer which "spits in the faces of the family and relatives of the victim."
