Morning Star.png Government Cuts Off Eastern Aleppo Rebels The Morning Star, London, 8 July 2016 The Syrian army effectively cut off extremists occupying the east of Aleppo city yesterday, advancing to within firing range of the key Castello Road. Elite troops took the Mallah Farms area north of Aleppo on Wednesday following days of fighting and yesterday were less than two miles north of the only road into the rebel area. Zakaria Malahifji of the Fastaqim insurgent faction said: "Currently nobody can get in or out of Aleppo." Fighting continued despite the government's three-day "regime of calm" in other parts of the country. About 5,000 religious fundamentalists under the banner of the Army of Conquest - including al-Qaida's Syrian affiliate the Nusra Front - have occupied the east of the city since 2012. They surround troops in the historic central citadel on three sides and regularly shell civilian districts in the west of the city.
