AU Call to Part, Disarm South Sudan's Warring Factions

The Morning Star, London, 20 July 2016

The African Union summit in Rwanda resolved to "separate and disarm" rival
government factions in South Sudan, South African President Jacob Zuma said
yesterday.

Speaking on his return from the summit in Kigali that ended on Monday, Mr
Zuma said a meeting of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development - the
regional trade bloc that comprises eight countries from the Horn of Africa,
the Nile Valley and the Great Lakes - had called for the warring parties to
be disarmed - without specifying how.

The two-year civil war between Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)
led by President Salva Kiir and SPLM-in-Opposition led by Vice-President
Riek Machar flared up again two weeks ago in the capital Juba.

But on Monday Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said he opposed UN
secretary-general Ban Ki Moon's call to the security council to impose an
arms embargo on South Sudan, saying it would "destroy the local force on
which you need to build a strong integrated army."

UN Children's agency Unicef said yesterday 11 people had died in a suspected
cholera outbreak in Juba and elsewhere.
