Morning Star.png Rousseff Faces Trial Legislative Coup on Workers' Party The Morning Star, London, 11 August 2016 Brazil's senate voted yesterday to put suspended President Dilma Rousseff on trial for allegedly breaking fiscal rules in her management of the federal budget. In the latest step in the legislative coup against the Workers' Party politician, senators voted 59-21 for the trial despite an earlier report by senate auditors clearing Ms Rousseff of the charges. The trial is expected to be heard later this month, followed by a vote on whether to impeach the president - a move that would annul the votes of more than 50 million Brazilians. The drive to impeach the leftwinger was led by her erstwhile allies in Vice-President Michel Temer's Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). But Mr Temer's interim government has been hit by revelations of cover-ups in the "Car Wash" bribery probe at state oil firm Petrobras, in which PMBD bigwigs are embroiled. World leaders shunned last week's Olympic opening ceremony over Mr Temer's lack of legitimacy.
