Teachers Shun Classrooms Following Installation of CCTV Cameras

Teachers at Ntji Mothapo Primary School in Limpopo have snubbed pupils after
they bluntly refused to teach in classrooms fitted with CCTV cameras.

The whole drama started on July 29 when some teachers affiliated to the SA
Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) demanded the removal of the cameras before
they would go back to classes.

Throwing its weight behind the teachers, SADTU provincial secretary Matome
Raphasha said there was no agreement between the school, the union and the
provincial education department that cameras will be installed inside
classrooms as they will restrain the privacy of the teachers.

27 classrooms in Ntji Mothapo Primary School in the Ramogale section of
GaMothapo village, are currently fitted with cameras and white boards worth
R22000.

The school which has 1367 pupils from grades R to seven and 36 teachers,
also has overhead projectors in eight classrooms.

A teacher who spoke to reporters said the equipment was bought through funds
from government and that it baffles management that some teachers resolved
to boycott lessons because of the installation of cameras.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said the teachers who refused to teach
under cameras had accused the principal, Ngoako Rapaledi of embezzlement.
But now, they bluntly refused to teach the children having seen his
achievement.

When reporters visited the school on Wednesday, most of the teachers were
spotted sitting and chatting with loud voices while a good number of pupils
were playing outside their classrooms.

Departmental spokesman, Naledzani Rasila, suggested that installation of the
cameras shouldn't deter teachers from teaching; stating that if the cameras
are for security, then they should be switched off during classroom
teachings. However, a visit to a neighbouring school, Gerson Ntjie Secondary
School, shows teachers there have no problem teaching under cameras unlike
their colleagues at Ntji Mothapo Primary School.
