Morning Star.png Duterte Vows to Seek Deal in South China Sea Dispute The Morning Star, London, 13 August 2016 Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said yesterday that he wants to strike a deal with Beijing to end the South China Sea dispute. He made the comments as an aside to his offer of peace with the two largest Muslim rebel groups in the south of the Philippines. "I would like to appeal to all that we stop this war. I am pleading so there will no longer be blood," he said. Referring to China, Mr Duterte said "We're not in a hurry to wage war, we're in a hurry to talk." Meanwhile, former president Fidel Ramos, who Mr Duterte dispatched to Hong Kong this week for talks on the dispute, met Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Fu Ying in the autonomous territory. Last month, China rejected a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in favour of the Philippines. Mr Ramos said the two sides had agreed on the need to reduce tensions through talks, which he hinted could take place at a series of forthcoming international gatherings. Mr Duterte also rejected Washington's demands that he apologise for calling US ambassador Philip Goldberg a "son of a bitch" and "bakla" (gay) after the ambassador criticised him during his election campaign. Mr Goldberg was previously US ambassador to Bolivia but was expelled in 2008 for plotting against the government. Mr Duterte said: "He did not apologise to me when we saw each other. Why should I apologise to him?"
