EU Trying To Humiliate Turkey

The Morning Star, London, 16 August 2016

Turkey's foreign minister has accused the European Union of trying to
humiliate his country and NATO allies of failing to share intelligence.

In an interview with Germany's conservative daily Bild published yesterday,
Mevlut Cavusoglu said: "The Turkish people are traumatised" by the failed
July 15 putsch against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP government.
"Rather than helping Turkey, (European nations) are humiliating us," he
said.

EU nations have condemned Ankara's crackdown on suspected followers of
US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of being behind the coup,
warning that the government's actions could jeopardise the visa-free travel
for its citizens that was promised in return for Turkey agreeing to take
refugees deported en masse from Europe.

Threats and insults

Mr Cavusoglu said Turkey has received "only threats, insults and a total
blockage" from the EU.

The minister issued an apparent warning to fellow members of imperialist
alliance NATO, saying Turkey "must also co-operate with other partners on
buying and selling weapons systems.

"There are NATO partners who, for example, deny us the sale of air-defence
systems or the exchange of information," he said.

Last week Turkey pledged to work with Russia and Iran to end the Syrian
civil war, in which Ankara previously backed the opposite side from Moscow
and Tehran.

But the minister insisted that Ankara remained "one of NATO's biggest
supporters" and said speculation that Turkey could leave the imperialist
alliance was being raised "by anti-Turkish circles, not by us."

US nuclear-weapon fear

But a Washington peace-and-stability think tank the Stimson Centre warned
yesterday that some 50 US nuclear weapons stored at Turkey's Incirlik air
base were at risk of being captured by "terrorists or other hostile forces"
and should be withdrawn.

The electricity supply to the base was cut off during the coup and not
restored for a week, while the Turkish commander and a dozen other officers
were arrested.

"Whether the US could have maintained control of the weapons in the event of
a protracted civil conflict in Turkey is an unanswerable question," report
co-author Laicie Heeley said.

Swedish sex story

Turkey protested to Sweden and Austria yesterday over "distorted" claims
that the government had legalised sex with children. Last month the Turkish
Constitutional Court ruled that an adult having consensual sex with a
15-year-old should be punished less harshly than one who abuses a
four-year-old.

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom tweeted: "Turkish decision to
allow sex with children under 15 must be reversed," while a news ticker at
Vienna airport carried a similar headline yesterday.
