SACTWU.jpg SACTWU Media Release, 7 October 2016 Newcastle clothing workers support COSATU strike action Over 2000 clothing workers in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, are on strike today. Most of these workers toil in appalling sweatshop conditions, earning bitterly low wages. On International Decent Work Day today, they raise their voices strongly against poverty wages being paid by employers in Newcastle. This morning, most clothing factories in Newcastle are quiet as workers show their support for SACTWU and COSATU's call to join the national protest action for decent work and for improved public transport. For example, in the Newcastle area of Madedeni, where many of the town's large clothing factories are situated, workplaces like Shang Hai (with 300 workers), Ni-Shang (280 workers), Mooi Enterprises (230 workers), Fei Yang Garments (180 workers), Thanda Clothing (150 workers), Budding Trade (120 workers), Scarlet Dawn (100 workers), Five Continent Clothing (100) and Glory Fair (170 workers) have completely shut down. Large numbers of these clothing industry workers are expected to join a march for decent work later today in Newcastle.
