Cape Times.png Teachers to boycott pupils' evaluation tests Siyavuya Mzantsi, Cape Times, Cape Town, 10 October 2016 The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) has maintained its call to boycott the systemic evaluation tests in the province. As thousands of Grade 3, 6 and 9 pupils across the province today prepare for the evaluation tests, the union claims pupils are being?over-tested. In addition, they claim there is no real opportunity to analyse the data obtained from the tests in order for interventions to be made to improve mathematics, numeracy and literacy levels. SADTU provincial secretary Jonavon Rustin said the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) tried to convince them to call off the boycott. "We are saying to the outsiders who will be conducting these tests that they must stay out of our schools. We are calling on parents and learners to support this call." Rustin said the union will ignore the results of the tests and instead mobilise more support so that the assessments do not take place next year. The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has weighed in and warned that they would disrupt the tests. Cosas Dullah Omar region declared that pupils will not write the systematic tests. The student body has also called on its members to join a gathering in front of Joe Slovo High School in Khayelitsha tomorrow before moving to schools around Cape Town to disrupt the tests. WCED spokesperson Paddy Attwell said: "The tests have contributed significantly to improving the quality of education in the Western Cape, by providing detailed feedback to individual schools on areas needing attention. "We use the results to inform continued professional development, which is in the interests of all teachers."
