Morning Star.png ANC Hails Summons for Finance Minister The Morning Star, London, 12 October 2016 South Africa's ruling ANC welcomed yesterday's court summons for Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan over fraud allegations during his time as head of the tax service. Mr Gordhan and his supporters, including the South African Communist Party and the opposition Democratic Alliance, claim the probe was launched at the behest of the wealthy Gupta family. He was sensationally reappointed finance minister last year, having served between 2009 and 2014, after a cabinet reshuffle that followed a media campaign led by business tycoon Johann Rupert. Market speculators also rallied to Mr Gordhan's side, with the rand falling 3 per cent against the dollar on the news. National Prosecution Authority advocate Shaun Abrahams commented: "If this decision was made by a white judge [or] by the public protector, you would not have a problem." Opposition-friendly Public Protector Thuli Madonsela is rushing to launch her own action against President Jacob Zuma over the Gupta speculations before she leaves office on Friday.
