ANC no letters.jpg 18 October 2016 Sad Passing of ANC Stalwart and Former MP Mewa Ramgobin The Office of the ANC Chief Whip in Parliament mourns the passing of struggle stalwart and former ANC Member of Parliament Cde Mewa Ramgobin. Cde Ramgobin, one of the distinguished giants of the struggle against apartheid, passed away yesterday at the age of 84. He was amongst the first generation of ANC deployees sent to Parliament after the historic 1994 democratic transition, serving faithfully for 15 years until his retirement in 2009. Cde Ramgobin was President of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC), which was founded in 1894 by Mahatma Ghandi, a preeminent and iconic leader of the Indian struggle for independence. In 1920 the NIC coalesced with Cape Indian Congress and the Transvaal Indian Congress to form the South African Indian Congress, a militant ANC ally that was instrumental in the Defiance Campaign and Congress of the People in the 1950s - under the radical stewardship of Dr Gangathura Mohambry Naicker and Dr Yusuf Dadoo. Cde Ramgobin, who was married to human rights activist and granddaughter of Mahatma Ghandi, Ela, cut his political teeth as a 17-year-old activist in the 1940s. His entire life was committed to fighting for social justice, equality and human rights, and was amongst the prominent campaigners for the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners. For his fierce and resolute activism, he suffered constant harassment, numerous arrests, bans, restrictions and attempts on his life. An accomplished writer and former National Vice President of the Congress of South African Writers, Cde Ramgobin marked the end of his 15 year parliamentary tenure with the release of his book, "Prisms of Light", which document his reflections on events and people that shaped his activism. The launch of the book was hosted by Parliament in 2009. As a member of our Caucus and a veteran of the Movement, Cde Ramgobin was a fountain of great wisdom, a remarkable political educator, an inspiring counsellor and an organic intellectual. He personified great humility, compassion and exemplary servanthood. We dip our revolutionary flag in honour of this great revolutionary and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and comrades.
