Morning Star.png SA Teachers Hail Scrapping of Hated Annual Tests The Morning Star, London, 20 October 2016 Teacher's union SADTU hailed South Africa's Department of Basic Education's decision to scrap the Annual National Assessment tests that teachers had vehemently opposed. Instead the department will institute a new three-yearly systematic assessment. But the opposition Democratic Alliance-controlled Western Cape province is still planning to privatise schooling there, using testing to commodify education. University students go back to classes Meanwhile the South African Communist Party in Gauteng Province congratulated the SA Students Congress and the Young Communist League for leading students back to classes. Students' education had been disrupted due to weeks of violent protests by the Fees Must Fall movement at Johannesburg's two main public universities.
