Vatican Announces Surprise Venezuela Peace Talks

The Morning Star, London, 26 October 2016

Venezuela's government and opposition forces will hold talks this Sunday
under the auspices of the Vatican and the Union of South American Nations.

The surprise talks on the island of Margarita were announced on Monday
evening as President Nicolas Maduro met Pope Francis in the Vatican.

"It's important to have light, a lamp to guide us through this tunnel of a
fight that we've entered," Mud opposition alliance general secretary Jesus
Torrealba said prior to a meeting with Monsignor Emil Paul Tscherrig, whom
the Pope dispatched in a bid to spark dialogue.

"We're embarking on a process of struggle that will be complex and
difficult," he added.

The Holy See said that the Pope had urged President Maduro to courageously
take the path of "sincere and constructive dialogue" to alleviate the
suffering of the Venezuelan people, especially the poor.

He urged him to promote a climate of renewed social cohesion that would
allow everyone to look to the future with hope.

The president thanked Pope Francis for helping to bring about dialogue
"between the distinct factions of the opposition and the legitimate and
Bolivarian government I preside over."

In contrast, twice-defeated opposition presidential candidate Henrique
Capriles said that this was a surprise to him, insisting that Mud had taken
part in a meeting with Vatican representatives but had not agreed to talks.

"What dialogue? In Venezuela a dialogue has not been initiated," he declared
on his radio programme, contradicting other Mud leaders.

Mr Capriles insisted that a "coup" had taken place and issued a renewed call
for street protests to be organised today.

Political tensions came to a head on Sunday when the Mud-controlled National
Assembly tried to declare that the government had broken with constitutional
order after authorities suspended a recall referendum against Mr Maduro due
to a series of major irregularities committed by the opposition.

The assembly demanded the president's impeachment, but its pronouncements
carry no legal weight since it flouted a Supreme Court ruling by swearing in
three deputies whose credentials were disputed because of fraud allegations.

The court has ruled that, until it returns to legal compliance, its actions
have no legal standing.
