SADTU KwaZulu Natal, 27 October 2016

Instability in Some Communities is affecting the Smooth Running of
Examinations

SADTU KZN is highly disturbed by what is unfolding around Umsinga. We are
reliably informed that because of faction fights in the community some
learners, especially boys, are having difficulty in getting to their schools
and write their Matric examinations.

The affected schools include the following:

1. Ntabende Primary School

2. Bhambatha High School

3. Macingwane High School

4. Kwazenzele High School

5. Umbonje High School

We have always maintained that education remains a pivotal societal matter
and as such we expect our communities to protect our schools, our teachers
and learners and in fact see to it that all the schools in their area become
centres of excellence.

It is also very disturbing that in the process one of the teachers has been
killed though at the moment we cannot say it is part of the faction fights.

Our interest as SADTU is to see all learners getting the opportunity to
write exams without any disturbances and intimidation.

As SADTU we recommend the following:

. That the Department of Education engages the Department of Community
Safety and Liaison to provide extra security to the affected schools.

. That counselling services to both teachers and learners, as already
started by the Department, must continue and be extended to other schools.

. That the KZN Department of Education must start developing a program
that will see the learners who could not write due to the circumstances,
getting a second chance of writing exams even if it is early next year.

These recommendations are put forward informed by the knowledge and
understanding that it has never been the intention of the Department to
exclude these learners from the learning and assessment program. Equally so,
it is not the making of these learners that they are finding themselves in
the centre of faction fights. With this, the Tribal Authority is expected to
assist to resolve these issues and also bring back stability in the area.

SADTU sends condolences to the family of the teacher who was killed as well
as to the Union he belonged to.

. Let all community members unite in defence of a brighter future of
their children.

. Let community members be at the forefront of protecting schools,
teachers and learners from all forms of intimidation and threats.

. Let us make schools centres of knowledge production and exchange, and
as such all of us must defend them.

LET THE 2016 MATRIC EXAMS RUN SMOOTHLY IN ALL SCHOOLS. IT IS IN THE INTEREST
OF ALL MEMBERS OF SOCIETY. LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT THE CLASS OF
2016 SUCCEEDS
