ANC, COSATU spurn 'Save SA' protest

Bonolo Selebano, The New Age, Johannesburg, 2 November 2016

The ANC in Gauteng will not be joining civil society organisations and
opposition political parties in today's Save SA march in the country's
capital city of Tshwane.

ANC provincial spokesperson Nkenke Kekana said the ANC in Gauteng never had
any intention to participate in the march as well as protest action
organised by the EFF and DA in support of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

"We never had any intention to participate but to picket outside court in
relation to Pravin Gordhan appearing in court.

"Now that there are no charges, there is no need for us to be in Tshwane
tomorrow," Kekana said.

He said unequivocally that the ANC only had the intention to close ranks
behind Gordhan in light of his then scheduled appearance in court.

"The issue was about the picket, we never had any intention to march except
to be in court to support Pravin Gordhan."

Kekana's comments come against the background of NPA head Shaun Abrahams
backtracking on the NPA's pursuit of Gordhan following representations made
by former senior South African Revenue Service (SARS) employees Ivan Pillay
and Oupa Magashula.

COSATU

COSATU provincial secretary Dumisani Dakile said COSATU had never taken a
decision to support Gordhan in court in the first place.

"We were never even part of the picket, even from the initial charges as
there was no structural decision for us as COSATU," Dakile said.

He said that it would take more than the NPA's withdrawal of charges against
Gordhan to stabilise relations within the ANCled tripartite alliance.

"This is just one small matter in a broader scheme, we can't look at it in
isolation as there are other matters that the alliance must deal with.

"The Pravin Gordhan issue is a symptom of a much deeper problem."

SACP

The SACP on Monday also called off its planned demonstration against
corporate capture. The announcement followed the NPA's decision to drop
charges against Gordhan.

[N.B.: Shortly after nine p.m. yesterday evening, the SACP made another
announcement to the effect that its Second Deputy General Secretary Cde
Solly Mapaila would address the Soros-funded SSA gathering, now billed to
take place at Pretoria's Anglican Cathedral.]
