Neoliberals Still Pushing TPP

The Morning Star, London, 21 November 2016

Among Pacific countries meeting in Peru on Saturday, some defended free
trade deals that US president-elect Donald Trump has vowed to axe.

The 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in Lima heard
appeals to save the neoliberal economic model that is increasingly opposed
by voters and trade unions.

Mr Trump has pledged to scrap the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal
signed in New Zealand this year - but not yet ratified by the US Congress -
on his first day in office on January 20.

He has also said he will renegotiate - or scrap - the North American Free
Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the US, Canada and Mexico that has seen
car-makers move production south of the border.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said the "tremendous despair" triggered
by Mr Trump's policies must not be allowed to slow down economic integration
in the world.

"Even if the US doesn't want to engage in free trade, president Trump needs
to know other countries do," he said.

Mr Key claimed it was still possible to salvage the 12-nation TPP by
introducing changes that would make it acceptable to the new US
administration or agreeing a less ambitious pact between the remaining
nations.

Speaking to the summit, US President Barack Obama admitted that tensions
over the deal are likely under the new Trump administration but urged the 11
nations to push forward with TPP and not assume the worst.

He said that once the administration sees how the deals work, "they'll
determine that it's actually good both for the US and our trading partners.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto told a forum of business leaders that
NAFTA benefited workers and firms on both sides of the border.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said the best response to rising protectionism
would be for APEC to negotiate a free trade area encompassing the entire
Pacific Rim - unlike TPP, which excluded Beijing.
