Well, the SACP has not rejected, and doesn't reject, Marxist classics.
Marxist classics were but not an article of faith. They are a product of a
concrete analysis of concrete conditions. It is Marx himself who said that
change is constant. We mustn't use classics to justify a refusal to analyse
the state of change since Marx, and to update Marxism accordingly where
it's necessary. Marxism cannot be complete for so long as there is change,
because as a study its focus is change, which it at the same time its
ultimate goal especially fundamental revolutionary change. Ours is to
develop it further in accordance with changing conditions. By doing so we
will be taking our cue from Marx himself, Engels and Leanin. For example
Marx and Engels developed a changed idea about the state after the failure
of the Paris commune. That wasn't the last failure. There was the collapse
of the Soviet Union. By the way this year will mark the centenary of the
1917 Great October Socialist Revolution. We need to become clear what went
wrong and make sure we don't repeat it.

In addition, tendencies such as corporate capture of the victories of the
working class and even strategic levers of the elements of the state that
were won for example after 1994 in South Africa must not be ignored.

A failure to recognise the changing nature of class struggle and the
conditions in which it takes place can only lead to absurdities, to
treating Marxism as a dogma, which is not.

Classics are important. But we cannot end our theoretical struggle with the
beginning.

*CUVSS Day Thirty-Six, Week Eight****

*The Classics, One*

*The Marxist Classics cannot be rejected by the SACP*, unless it wants to
stop being a communist party!

We touch 1845 works that Lenin didn’t know – *Theses on Feuerbach* and *The
German Ideology* – and the ones of 1847-8 that Lenin called *“first works
of mature Marxism”* – *The Poverty of Philosophy* and the *Communist
Manifesto.*

Classics are so-far-unsurpassed works, essential for human development. We
go through Marx’s *French Trilogy,* through his foundation of
*International* organisation, to the threshold of publication of his
masterpiece, *Capital.*
