6 January 2017 SADTU in Mpumalanga Wishes the 2016 Matric Class Well in Their Future Endeavours and calls for meaningful engagement with stakeholder to assist progressed learners The South African Democratic Teachers' Union in Mpumalanga wishes to congratulate all learners who passed Grade 12. We wish them well in their future endeavors. We call on all learners who did not make it not to despair but to exercise all options available to them to achieve a pass. In this regard, the department must provide these learners with as much information as possible to assist them to make helpful choices. We also wish to commend all teachers in general and our members in particular for the effort they put in despite the enormous difficulties they confront daily in the execution of their duties. We note that the number of progressed learners is increasing annually. This demands that more institutional support is required to place them on par with promoted learners when examinations commence. The Department must begin to meaningfully engage stakeholders on its plans to assist these learners. We also heartily note that the performance of rural and township schools continues to rise. These schools, majorities of which are perennially impecunious, increasingly match the performance of urban schools. This is a welcome development and deflates the stereotyping of this class of schools as incubators of underperformance. Mpumalanga has recorded a slight decline in achievement and this raises concern. The union in the province warned early last year that the provincial government's decision to place a moratorium on the filling of posts would have a detrimental effect on education. The reversal in fortunes affirms that the decision has stunted progress and severely compromised curriculum support for both learners and teachers. We reiterate our call to the Provincial government to remove the moratorium and ensure that critical teacher and learner support posts, many of which have disappeared from the organogram are filled.
