7 February 2017 SADTU supports NEHAWU's National Day of Action for Social Workers The South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) fully supports the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union's (NEHAWU's) National march on Friday, 10 February, 2017 to highlight the plight of workers in the Social Development Sector. SADTU fully agrees that Social Service professionals are the lowest paid professionals who play a critical role in lives of individuals, families as well as communities. They are not compensated in a dignified manner and valued as critical contributors towards building sustainable societies that are crucial for South Africa to meet its National Development Plan goals. NEHAWU has been in several negotiations with the employer since 2016 but the employer has failed to table a counter offer. As a result, NEHAWU declared a dispute and received a certificate to exercise its right to strike. The Union then engaged on a mobilisation programme that will culminate in Friday's National march. SADTU is united with its sister affiliate NEHAWU in support of the rights of workers to decent salaries and working conditions.
